There
are few things more disappointing than working long and hard on an important
project that you saw as key to the organization’s future success only to find
that its completion was totally underappreciated. It is time for a project post mortem to figure out what went wrong. What step did you neglect? How could the
leadership not understand and value the results of the project?
The
answer could be that you did not adequately build your case before you began.
Perhaps the project was not as significant as you originally thought. Maybe you did not spend the time to clearly
express to key stakeholders the business need for your project. Though you saw
the value, they were not convinced.
Next
time, be sure you do your homework and
your legwork. Check in with all those who will be affected. Understand all the
issues and risks from their point of view. Gather whatever data you can and
observe the situation to develop a complete picture of the situation. Then your
project presentation will garner far broader and higher level support…and the
results will be fully appreciated compared to other initiatives.
