Get an experienced mentor to lean on.
Especially if you are rather inexperienced at managing projects and your project post mortem assessment shows you need to improve both process and results, you could benefit greatly by carefully choosing a mentor who can guide you through your next assignment. We say “carefully” because your choice will make the difference in the degree of value you reap from the mentor relationship.
- Capability and Willingness: Choose a mentor who has the experience you need and is also someone who is willing and able to share their expertise with you. You need to know that there will be open, meaningful communication…a two-way street.
- Likelihood: Narrow the focus so you are more likely to get a “yes” response to your request. Do not go for a really long-term commitment that a high level person would find difficult to commit to. Limit your request in time as well as in scope. Select a few targeted goals that are realistic and reachable.
With a high quality mentor, you will see vastly improved project results and a more favorable project post mortem.
