The Value of a Project Review

The Value of a Project Review

Even if your project was far more successful than the botched-up chemistry experiment above, there is much to be learned from a project post mortem.

Do not dismiss your project team until you have convened and reviewed what went right and what went wrong. Otherwise you are liable to repeat the same mistakes and reinvent the wheel. This is your chance to evaluate and improve.

Encourage all project team participants to weigh in during the project post mortem. What challenges (e.g., lack of resources, wavering executive support, timing issues, conflict on the team) did they encounter? Were they fully resolved? The focus should be on improving future projects, not pointing fingers. What best practices should be an integral part of upcoming projects? What problems can you avoid next time?

Consider that you as project team leader might not be the best to solicit open, honest feedback. Perhaps it would be advisable to hire an objective third party to design and facilitate the discussion. Remember, this is your unique opportunity to realistically assess the success of the project and learn from any missteps so that the next project goes more smoothly.
